Teachers communicate well
The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

Evidence 1: I have created a Prezi presentation to introduce an end of the unit project for my students.

Rationale 1: I created this Presi presentation to introduce an end of the unit project for my 5th grade Spanish students. It was used at the end of our unit on clothing. My 5th grade students were instructed on creating a fashion show, where each student works with a partner, one being the Emcee describing their partner’s clothes while the other struts their stuff down the run way. Then the partners switch roles. The entire show is done in Spanish, allowing students to showcase their learning of the unit vocabulary, grammar and speaking ability. The students worked collaboratively and supported one another’s learning as they prepared for and presented the show. It was a great showcase of our communication abilities in Spanish!

As the teacher, this experience has helped me to be confident in my students speaking abilities. I created this elaborate speaking showcase, and it went off without a hitch. I was so proud of my students, and now I know that creating and completing big scale projects are truly doable, even in a class that is only 30 minutes long! I found the time limits of the class to be the biggest obstacle in preparing for and presenting our fashion show.

The fashion show is the first completely oral presentation my students have done in Spanish. They were very hesitant and uncertain of their abilities, but they all did it. I think it is an experience they will remember and one that built a lot of confidence, and assured them that they really can speak in Spanish!

KSD

6.K.1 The teacher understands communication theory, language development, and the role of language in learning.

As a Spanish teacher, I understand that my students must practice speaking Spanish in order to learn become Spanish speakers. When I was in school I remember my Spanish classes filled with written lesson after written lesson always focusing on grammar. I rarely remember any opportunity or requirement to actually speak in Spanish. In my class speaking is a big part of our learning. This end of the unit project is an example of my understanding of how speaking the language plays a tremendous part in our learning in my class.

6.S.1 The teacher models effective communication strategies in conveying ideas and information and in asking questions (e.g. monitoring the effects of messages, restating ideas and drawing connections, using verbal, aural, and kinesthetic cues, being sensitive to nonverbal cues given and received).

This Prezi presentation effectively communicates the requirements of my students in our end of the unit fashion show. Not only does it explicitly explain the requirements, but it offers a video example of what is expected by each student. The expectations are clearly explained and exemplified through the use of this Prezi presentation.

6.D.1 The teacher recognizes the power of language for self-expression, identity development, and learning.

This project provided a powerful example of my students learning! My students can actually, and effectively, speak Spanish! This project demonstrated my students’ abilities and helped to build self-confidence.
