Teachers know how to manage a classroom The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Rationale 1: I planned this unit for my 4th grade Spanish classes and taught it several times. I designed a unit that incorporated various cooperative learning activities, technology and individual work because I understand that students learn differently and by addressing a variety of teaching and learning styles I will be able to reach all of the learners in my classroom, keeping them focused and engaged, thus managing the class through active engagement and success.
In creating this unit I demonstrated my knowledge of classroom management and how student engagement, excitement and success are the key to a well-managed classroom. I understand that students learn to speak by speaking; therefore, I included a variety of cooperative learning activities that required students to talk and work together. I included technology such as the use of a screencast and the use of a Jeopardy game to introduce and or support the unit content. These activities kept everyone engaged and on task.
My students were excited about this unit and the activities we did. They learned the content very well as the speaking activities, end of the unit game, unit assessment and the writing assignments showed.

5.K.3 The teacher knows how to help people work productively and cooperatively with each other in complex social settings.
In this unit I created many cooperative learning games that required my students to work together. One activity in particular that uses technology is a Jeopardy game that requires my students to work cooperatively with team members to solve problems and earn points. This is a highly motivational game.
5.S.1 The teacher creates a smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for themselves and one another, participate in decision making, work collaboratively and independently, and engage in purposeful learning activities.
In this unit my students are learning how to use the verb gustar in Spanish. They begin by watching a screencast that explains how the verb is used, and then the students participate in various speaking activities that require them to practice using the verb. One of the fun activities we do is a Find Someone Who activity. In this activity students are held accountable for their learning as they walk around finding classmates who like or dislike certain things. The game is done completely in Spanish. Once someone is found for any square on the recording sheet, the person has to answer a question related to the like or dislike. This prevents students from just simply signing their classmates’ sheets anywhere just to get it done quickly.
5.D.3 The teacher values the role of students in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate for learning.
As a Spanish teacher, I realize that my students will learn to speak Spanish only if they practice speaking Spanish. Therefore, in my classroom it is common place to see and hear students up, walking around and talking, to one another, practicing the things we are learning. These types of activities promote a positive class climate and help to create a fun place for learning.
