4 Teachers know how to teach The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
Rationale 1:
This online unit was developed to provide my fifth grade Spanish students a place to go to find vocabulary lists, grammar concepts explained, helpful websites and screencasts to support student learning/practice of the unit content. This online unit also provided a space for my students to share their projects, ideas and questions regarding what we are learning in class.
This class was developed in EDT 672, and it is for my 5th grade Spanish students. This unit is currently being taught. The online class has been a nice resource for my students, and it will be used for students to upload their final multimedia projects.
Creating this online unit has helped me to be a better teacher. I feel that I am using technology in an exciting and new way that motivates and encourages my students to learn. The students are excited to use the online class. I now know how to create an on line unit, and I plan to create more over the summer.
My students are able to use the online unit. They can log into it, navigate around it, and use the resources I have included in it, such as the links to the web resources to viewYou tube videos and/or play games that support their understanding of using adjectives in Spanish. They will learn how to upload their final multimedia projects at the end of the unit and how to answer discussion questions and respond to others using the wiki.
KSD
4.K.3 The teacher knows how to enhance learning through the use of a wide variety of materials and technological resources (e.g. computers, audio-visual technologies, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print resources).
My online unit provides my students with a wide variety of learning tools. For example I have several links to You Tube videos, screencasts and games that will support my students learning of how to use adjectives in Spanish.
4.S.2 The teacher uses multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance capabilities and that help students assume responsibility for identifying and using learning resources.
One of the components of my online unit is the discussion questions. These questions require the students to view various links and then reply to the question, or demonstrate their understanding, by replying in Spanish.
4.D.1 The teacher values the development of students’ critical thinking, independent problem solving, and performance capabilities
My students will be completing final multimedia projects to demonstrate their learning throughout this unit. The students will be creating Prezi presentations in Spanish, and then screencasting their Prezi’s so that their voice can be recorded as the Prezi presentation is shown to the class. This final project will demonstrate each child’s ability to use adjectives correctly in Spanish, as well as their knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax, and their pronunciation in Spanish as they present their projects to the class.
