3 Teachers understand that children learn differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Evidence 1: I have created a class wiki to be used with my 3rd 4th and 5th grade Spanish students.
Rationale 1: As a Spanish teacher of elementary students I often hear, “My mom or dad does not speak Spanish. They can’t help me with my homework.” I hear from parents as well, expressing that they don’t know how to help their child learn Spanish because of their lack of knowledge of the subject, or the lack of resources available to them to provide support. As a result of this I have created a class website for my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Spanish students and their parents. It is a place for my students and their parents to go to get copies of the unit vocabulary lists, explanations of the units’ grammar concepts, and access to various websites and web resources to help support the concepts we are learning in each unit of study. I have included a comprehensive list of websites to go to for extra practice and explanations. I have uploaded screen casts and power point presentations that I and/or my colleagues have created to teach various concepts. It has proven to be a great resource for my struggling students, as well as for my advanced students, and for the parents who want to learn along with their children, or who want to be able to support their child’s learning at home. In class we occasionally visit the website for me to show them what is available with each unit, and to encourage them to use the site.
Creating a class website, updating it regularly, and adding things to it have helped me to become a better teacher. I have a desire to constantly find resources to add to my website to enhance my students’ learning. Brining technology into the learning process excites me and my students.
Using the website has definitely helped my students. In the simplest way, it has taken away the excuse that I couldn’t study for the test or do my homework because I lost my vocabulary list, or I forgot it at home. This is not an excuse I hear any more, because the students all know where to get another copy if they need it. In addition, my students have access to free and fun games that helps them learn what we are doing in the classroom. What a great way to learn!

3.K.1 The teacher understands and can identify differences in approaches to learning and performance, including different learning styles, multiple intelligences, and performance modes, and can design instruction that helps use students’ strengths as the basis for growth.
Providing a resource like a class website opens doors to all of my students with different learning styles and abilities. It is a great resource for my struggling students who do not quite grasp a concept we learned in class, so they can go to the screencast on the verb gustar, for example, to see and hear another explanation before they attempt their homework assignment. Their parents can watch right along with them, so they can work together to help the child understand the concept better. My students can go to websites that offer audio support, so that students and parents can hear the vocabulary spoken, and can practice pronunciation of the unit vocabulary. For my advanced learners, they can challenge and entertain themselves with the games and other web resources I have included on my website.
3.S.4 The teacher can identify when and how to access appropriate services or resources to meet exceptional learning needs.
As stated above, my website offers a wide array of web resources to support the learning of my students, from simple vocabulary lists and written explanations of the grammar for every unit of study, to videos, games, online tests, screencasts, podcasts, etc. that all support what we are learning the classroom. As a class we visit the website occasionally to see what is there, and also to practice and learn from the activities.
3.D.1 The teacher believes that all children can learn at high levels and persists in helping all children achieve
success.
This class website is an extension of what I can do in the classroom. I want my students to experience success in learning Spanish. The website offers 24/7 support. Therefore, if a student has a question, needs help in understanding a concept, or completing an assignment, and they cannot speak to me directly, they can turn to the class website as a resource for the support they need. With that kind of support, student success is more attainable.
