1 Teachers know the subjects they are teaching.

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.

Evidence1: A 5 day lesson plan I developed on Spanish subject/pronoun match and present tense AR verb conjugation

Rationale 1: These lessons were developed to help my students understand Spanish subject/pronoun matching and present tense AR verb conjugation. These lessons were designed for my 4th grade Spanish classes and were taught as part of the curriculum on verb conjugation.

These lessons incorportate a lot of cooperative learning techniques and the use of technology in a variety of forms from using the SMART board to using web resources such as You Tube and interactive games and learning tools. As a teacher I was able to create a SMART board lesson for my students and I was able to find relevant web resources that helped to enhance my teaching, making a rather boring, abstract topic come to life for my students. It was obvious that my students were engaged, challenged and enjoying their learning. This was not an easy task with this content. I find teaching many of the grammar points of Spanish to be very dull. Using technology and cooperative learning techniques has helped me develop into a more effective educator.

My students have a better understanding of the topic, than my students did in the past. The games and the use of the various web resources really did make learning fun. Verb conjugation is a very difficult concept for students to grasp, but my students seem to have a great understanding of it. This is evident in their test scores, their writing and speaking in class. The middle school teacher has also commented to me how the 6th graders this year really have a great grasp on the concept.

KSD:

1.K.1 The teacher understands the major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s) s/he teaches.
The use of interactive learning games allows my students the opportunity to talk, listen, question and explain to one another. These are all an essential part of learning for my students, and truly help them to understand this challenging concept. As the teacher, I understand this need and encourage it in my classroom.

1.S.1 The teacher effectively uses multiple representations and explanations of disciplinary concepts that capture key ideas and links them to students’ prior understandings.
I understand that one approach to learning subject/pronoun matching and present tense AR verb conjuation is not going to be successful in reaching all of my students. That is why I have incorporated many different learning tools and games in these lessons. I show my students how we conjugate verbs in English, so that they have a clearer understanding of what verb conjugation is in the first place. Then using a You Tube video to drive home the idea, while at the same time incorporating a popular pop culture song, makes learning relevant and fun.

1.D.3 The teacher has enthusiasm for the discipline(s) s/he teaches and sees connections to everyday life.
Using cooperative games such as Fan and Pick and Showdown and Numbered Heads Together creates enthusiasm among my students and me. I think it is obvious to my students that I enjoy teaching this concept, as the lessons are upbeat, full of discussion and fun!
